Egypt, located on the northeastern corner of Africa, has history dating back to 4000 B.C. It was later ruled by Persia, Alexander the Great, the ptolemies, the Romans, the Turks, and Napoleon. British troops occupied Egypt in 1882, becoming defacto rulers. It was made a British protectorate from 1914 until 1922 when it became a sovereign, independent kingdom. The monachy was abolished and a republic proclaimed in 1952. Joined with Syria to form the United Arab Republic, and with Yemen as the United Arab States in 1958. The associations was disolved in 1961. Renamed the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1971.
