French West Africa was formed in 1895 by grouping several colonies (Mauritania, Senegal, Dahmey, French Sudan, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Niger, French Guinea, and Togo) under one administration. The colonies became territories within the French Union in 1946, autonomous members of French Community in 1958, and independent republics in 1960.
