Madagascar, located in the Indian Ocean 250 miles from the southeast coast of Africa, was a French colony from 1886 until 1958 when it became the Malagasy Republic, an autonomous state within the French Community. It attained complete independence in 1960, and renamed the Demacratic Republic of Madagascar in 1976.
