Southern Rhodesia, located in the east-central part of southern Africa, was a British colony. It joined the British protectorates of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953 to form the federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The federation was dissolved in 1963 when Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland became independent republics of Zambia and Malawi respectively. Southern Rhodesia renamed Rhodesia. It became an independent Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980.
