Tanganyika was formerly a German colony of German East Africa, and was administered by the British since WWI. Tanganyika became independent under the British Commonwealth in 1961. Zanzibar and Pemba, located in the Indian Ocean 22 miles off the coast of Tanganyika, were British protectorates. Granted self-government in 1961, and independence within the British Commonwealth in 1963. Tanganyika, Zanzibar and Pemba joined to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, and later changed the name to Tanzania.
