Bangladesh is bordered by India and Burma. When British India attained independence in 1947, it was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Pakistan consisted of East Pakistan and West Pakistan. East Pakistan seceded from Pakistan in 1971, and declared itself an independent republic of Bangladesh.
