Albania, bounded by Yugoslavia, Greece and the Adriatic Sea, was first established as an independent state in 1443. Became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1468. Independence was re-established in 1912. In 1920, following WWI occupation by several nations, a republic was setup. Ahmet Zogu seized the presidency in 1925 and proclaimed himself King Zog I in 1928. Occupied by Italy in 1939 and then by Germany in 1943. Ruled by communist partisans after WWII and the People's Republic was formally established in 1976. A new republican government was elected in 1992.
