The many German states were united into an empire in 1871. Became the Weimar Republic 1917-33, and the Third Reich 1933-45. It came under Allied control from 1945 to 1949. It was divided into the German Federal Republic and the German Democratic Republic in 1949. The two republics were reunited under the German Federal Republic in 1990.
