Hungary, located in central Europe, was a kingdom found by the Magyars in the 9th century. After suffering repeated Turkish invasions and followed by Habsburg control, it regained independence in 1867 under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Became a republic briefly in 1918, followed by communist rule in 1919 and then regained monarchy in 1920. Came under German occupation during WWII and Soviet occupation after WWII. It became the People's Republic in 1949 and a republic since 1989.
