Latvia, located in east Europe, came under Russian domination 1795-1918. Gained independence 1918-1939. Annexed to the Soviet Union in 1940. Occupied by Germany 1941-44. Reestablished as a member republic of the Soviet Union 1944-91. Declared independence in 1991.
