Saar, bounded by France to the south and Luxembourg to the west, was part of France in 1766, but was divided between Prussia and Bavariain in 1915. Became an autonomous territory in 1919. Returned to Germany in 1935. Occupied by France 1945-1957. Became a state of Germany in 1957.
