Sweden, located in northern Europe between Norway and Finland, was found in the 10th century as a Christian stronghold. After conquering Finland late in the 13th century, Sweden, together with Norway, came under the rule of Denmark 1397-1523, in an association known as the Union of Kalmar. Regained independence in 1523, and became one of the great powers of Europe in the 17th century. A new constitution in 1975 restricts the function of the king to a ceremonial role.
