Ecuador, located astride the equator on the Pacific coast of South America, was part of the province, later Vice-royalty, of Peru until 1739 when it became part of the Vice-royalty of New Granada. Gained independence in 1835. Since September 7, 2000, Ecuador no longer issues it's own currency, and the U. S. Dollars became the legal tender.
