Women in Sports or Girls??

After watching the Olympics for hours in February, I couldn't help but wonder, "Why are the women referred to as girls while men are referred to as guys?" Sure, I had noticed this discrepency in the past. I had heard it and briefly discussed it in a couple of women's issues classes in college, but it didn't bother me then as much as it does me now. Perhaps it is because I am older and wiser, or maybe it has to do with being called a girl myself (when I was an adult woman) and being upset by it more frequently.

There isn't much to say on this issue, other than--it is time to stop this discrepancy. How can women in sports be taken seriously if they aren't even called women?? Why aren't men called boys? I do not like watching women's basketball or women's skiing and hearing male and female announcers say, "The girls are ready to go today." Maybe women in sport will be taken seriously once we are treated with full respect. Why don't women in the sports speak out or do they? I have written a couple of execs at the networks complaining. I have yet to hear anything. Even though this is not what I would call a major issue, I believe it is important enough for us as women (and even you men) to speak out against. Equality will come, but sometimes it takes baby steps.
