Women's Heath Facts
This information was gathered from the May 1998 issue of Readers Digest. The article was entitled Crucial Advice From Top Women Doctors.

Until age 34, accidents are the major cause of death for American women.

Between ages 35 and 74, the major cause of death is cancer.

From age 75 and on, cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death.

Almost twice as many women die of cardiovascular disease each year as die of ALL forms of cancer.

There is no scientific evidence that arthritis can be cured, treated, or prevented with copper bracelets, rice diets or magnets.

If cervical cancer is caught early, women have about a 90% survival rate.

If ovarian cancer is caught early, women have about a 93% survival rate. If it is not caught early and treated, women have a 39% to 46% survival rate.

Women over 40 should have a mammogram.

Women 50 and older who get annual mammograms can significantly reduce their risk of dying of breast cancer.

What Does all of This Mean?

It means we all need to take care of ourselves and talk to our doctors. A painless lump does not necessarily mean it is not cancer, a painful lump does not necessarily mean it is cancer. There are so many new studies and so many new treatments (those that work and those that don't) that it is to our best benefit to have regular check ups with our doctors. We definately need to watch our diets and make sure we eat balanced meals. We have to remember that if we don't take care of ourselves, if we stay quiet and ignore possible problems, we are not only hurting ourselves, but we are hurting our friends and families as well.
