After her mothers death there is no one to protect Brianna from her stepfather. He, Lord Montague, is more a devil then a saint. In the moment that Brianna finds out that her future is to be the mistress of her stepfather, she defends herself and tries to kill him. After the supposed killing, she flees together with her housemaid Rachel. They take a ship to the West Indian Islands.

In a terrible storm the ship goes down. Brianna and Rachel survive the misfortune on a raft. After three days a ship finds them. Captain Roarke O'Conner doesn't like the thought of women being on his ship, but they are ill and that's why the doctor accommodates Brianna in the captains cabin.

Rachel finds her luck very fast. After her arrival on St. Eustatius she marries Dr. Flieding. For Brianna and Roake is the way to a common future full of misunderstandings and secrets of their past which they must overcome.
