After three long years Kane Stodden is finally discharged from prison. They have discovered that he was innocent. Now he wants to start a whole new life and for this reason he drives to Hardeeville, a town where Melanie Abercrombie lives. She wrote letters to him for the past year.
Mel is so deeply moved by his presence that she faints. Because he was condemned for 45 years because of murder she believes he has fled. After the misunderstanding is cleared up, she invites Kane to stay with her and her father till he finds a place to live.
Kane is delighted by Mel not only because of her letters, but also due to her natural character. She has given him a new reason for living. Slowly their friendship becomes more, they start to fall in love. However, Kane is an ex-convict and the people do not trust him and Mel believes she isn't ready for a relationship with a man.
Nevertheless they reach a point that their affection toward each other cannot be stopped. Will they find a life together?
