Lady Clio of Camrose was her own person. She had her own ideas about how things should be. She was constantly getting into trouble because of this. When she was fifteen, two things happened to her. One, her father died and two, she was betrothed to Merrick de Beaucourt. He was a legendary Knight in the service of the King. Since her father died and she was a ward of the court, she was sent to a convent to wait until Merrick comes to fetch her. He was supposed to be back in England after four years but it took six years for him to come back.

When Clio found out that Merrick was on his way to fetch her, she packed and decided to go ahead and go to Camrose to wait for Merrick. Therefore, when Merrick comes to the convent, she is no longer there.

Clio has also decided that since Merrick made her wait for two extra years, she would be two hours late every time he summons her. Merrick finally realizes that Clio is not going to be the docile wife that he thought he was getting.

Clio also decides that she has to do something useful rather than just be a wife to Merrick so she decides to take over the brewery. Her results with the ale are surprising and sometimes not at all what they should be.

This was a truly wonderful book. If you are like me, you will laugh and you will cry. This book is Jill Barnett at her best. My advice to you is just sit back, read and enjoy.
