Arabelle Portham and Marucs Wainwright, Earl of Colford, have been enemies for years. Marcus insults Arabelle on her debut ball and that's why they just can't like each other. This had happened 8 years earlier. But the beginning love between Julia and Tobias, their young relatives, they can't accept. Now they want to work together in this affair.
It looks like nothing can take these young lovers apart and Marcus and Arabelle start to believe that maybe they should marry when Arabella is kidnapped. The kidnappers notice soon that they have the wrong woman and take her to the Earl.
The distrust between Marcus and Arabelle grows again because Arabelle believes Marcus is her kidnapper. He is nearly ruined and has no money so he needs a rich bride. That's why she thinks he did that to marry her because she is so rich.
Until both can finally be happy together they still have to clear up a lot of misunderstanding.

Portia Haverall is very often noticeable because of her impossible behavior. Her father has disinherited her because she has refused to marry her cousin.
Portia wants to visit her grand aunt who isn't at home and that's why she spends the night in an inn. In the evening she helps a distraught young woman and so she meets Connor Dewhurst, Earl of Doncaster. Conner enters her room without her permission and Portia strikes at his head with a heavy object.
From the first moment both start to dispute. Connor needs a dame de compagnie for his disabled mother and asks Portia if she wants to accompany him and stay a while at his mothers because she was the reason why he had lost the woman who was supposed to take the job.
With Portia in the house the Dowager Countess of Doncaster finds again joy in her life. Both women start with a conspiracy. They want to make the Earl more fashionable and find a wife for him. But Connor recognizes that he only wants Portia.
A funny story about two very headstrong characters.
