With her dark eyes and black curls Amanda Bowen isn't really a beauty in the eyes of the British high society because she is an intelligent woman. Lord Saville thinks she is the right woman for his corpulent uncle, Sir Digby.

Amanda isn't looking for a husband, but her grandmother wants to see her married. Sir Digby should marry to get his heir. So both the grandmother and Lord Saville enter into a pact - they want their relations to fall in love.

From the first moment when Keith Marsh, Marquess of Saville and Amanda meet they start to dispute. Amanda is disturbed that Lord Saville is courting her young stepmother Lurlene. After Sir Digby meets Amanda's friend Pamela he is surprised to find a woman who loves food like he does.

Keith falls in love with Amanda and Digby with Pam. The right combination - no question - but how should they solve the tangle? And why was Keith first get engaged with Lurlene, but she marries Amanda's father?
