This was a delightful story about two very headstrong characters.
Miss Audra Leigh Master is a 28 year old unmarried woman who loves romantic books about knights. Because her mother is a very cheerful woman who is since two years on a honeymoon with her fifth husband in Italy, Audra has to take care about her younger sister Cecily.
They are living on the estate of the Duke of Raeburn, Simon Lakeland, a very irritable 36 year old bachelor. He is looking for a wife because he needs an heir. But all the woman who try to get his attention are in his eyes stupid and pushy.
Then he finds Audra who is looking for her sisters pug on his land. He believes this is also a simple trick just to meet him. But very fast he has to recognize that Audra is not a "simple" woman. She says to him she isn't looking for a husband and that she will not visit his ball even if he falls on this knees and ask for her presence.
What a challenge for Simon. This sister Lady Augusta finds out that Simon is interested in only this woman and so she invites her to the ball. Because Cecily wants to go there so much they visit the ball and Simon gets another chance to meet with the enchanting Audra.
But, she will not give up her free life for a husband. So it is hard work for Simon to show her how much he loves her.
A very funny story and I am sure all regency fans will be quite entertained while reading the book.
