Frankfurt am Main

I am pleased to introduce Frankfurt to you. Even though, I did not actually grow up in this big, pulsing, never resting city I worked there for a few years and often visited the sights. The city has a long history and many facets and aspects worth some exploring. Be it, that you would like to roam around the variety of museums along the river embankment

and the center of the town or if you prefer to mingle with the locals, having a glass(or two--or three) of the famous Ebbelwoi. For out-of-towners: That's an alcoholic applecider. You drink it either cold, straight or mixed with mineralwater or soda (the lemon or orange kind - don't even dare to ask for a coke mix!! ... and never ever ask a german barkeeper to put ice in your beer or cider!!)
Take a stroll thru the city center, best by starting at the Roemer The Roemer |

and following the shopping passages (no motorized vehicles allowed there). But Frankfurt has even more to offer. The Frankfurt Opera House is famous for its cultural program and the various concertshalls offer concerts and other musical highlights for everyone's taste. Frankfurt Opera |

If you like to the fairgrounds visit Frankfurt during spring or fall, when the traditional Dippemess takes place. Originating from a medieval tradefair mainly for pottery and the likes it now has become one of the largest fairgrounds in Germany. Rollercoasters, Ferris-Wheel, stands selling pottery with charming local designs and other traditional items which not only look rather decorative but are also useful in everydays use mix with beertents, foodstands advertising local culinary pleasures and sweet delights and modern craftmenship exhibitions. Another site concerning the fair atmosphere that you don't really want to miss is the famous Frankfurt Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas-Market). It is an Open-air event starting the fourth sunday before Christmas and lasting until Christmas Eve. Everything about Christmas can be found there. In order to warm up I recommend to try some Glühwein, a german specialty of hot spiced red wine.
