Rosie's Ramblings

February 3, 2001

Hello Out There,

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have spring fever. I miss yard sales, live auctions, and antique shows. There are a few events scheduled around here in the winter, but most are flea markets with more beanie babies than anything that I would consider to be a treasure. It seems that even the local antique merchants have difficulty finding new items in the winter. At least there’s still eBay.

As I was preparing for this month’s update, I visited several websites to get a feel for the “Roaring 20’s”. It was an amazing time in history. I already associated it with “The Great Gatsby”, the Charleston, Prohibition, and Art Deco. I learned it was a time of many “firsts”: Academy Awards, “Bathing Beauty” pageants, and the 19th Amendment (giving women the right to vote). Little Orphan Annie made her debut. King Tut’s tomb was discovered. Oh, and the new foods: Velveeta, Rice Crispies, Eskimo Pie, Kool-Aid, and Baby Ruth candy bars to name a few. Of course what the websites didn’t mention were the needle books available at the time. A couple of my favorites celebrate Lindbergh’s heroic flight across the Atlantic. I hope you have time to read my brief synopsis of his thrilling accomplishment and to view the needle books created in his honor: Lindbergh Page. Now, in the dead of winter, you can at least take a brief trip back in time.

Along with the Lindbergh books, I have made additions to my “Zeppelin” and “Horseshoe” pages as well. The “Skylark” book was made in Germany and contains neat little matching needle packets. “Prize Medal” is a fabulous horseshoe-shaped book, complete with lovely ladies and a fancy car (is this from the 20’s too?).

I appreciate all of the kind comments about the changes made here last month. Keep those e-mails coming, they do brighten my days. In the midst of winter, I need all the help I can get.

Happy Hunting,

Rosie
