The Hunt
Sure, I could have probably accumulated the same collection sitting on my rear in front of a computer (and in less time). But,...I got to experience the "hunt". Every true collector knows what I'm talking about. The heart beats faster, the palms dampen, and you just know, somebody is going to get that item before you get the antique mall person to open the cabinet.
Just yesterday some "Bill Gates" type person on TV predicted that shopping, as we know it, will soon be obsolete. He claimed that it will all be done on-line. I hope that is never true about the collectibles market. Sure, I can find things on eBay I might never run across in "real life". But, the most interesting collectibles, in my opinion, are those you find at random. The ones that speak to you. The ones that you had no clue that you wanted or needed. Yet, when you see them, you have to have them. These items are the true "collectible treasures". Some of my first needle books fall into this category. I love "One Hundred", because I will never forget my excitement the day I found it. I know now (from watching eBay) that it is not rare or particularly valuable. I still love it because it has memories attached.
