Rosie's Ramblings

July 1, 1999

Hello Out There,

I just got back from a 1000 mile loop from Illinois through Arkansas and Missouri on a search for needle books (and to visit relatives). I shopped in huge antique malls and tiny shops and saw lots of Sewing Susans and Happy Homes. They must have made millions of these. I only found one "new" needle book. What a disappointment! I did pick up several duplicates (cheap) that I can use to trade someday.

A needle book mystery:
I recently obtained a copy of a Paty Needle Company catalog dated 1933 which includes an advertisement for the Army and Navy Needle Book which features the Iowa ship on the cover. The naval ship Iowa was not even commissioned until 1938???? I would love to hear from anyone who can clear up this mystery.

Ebay Record:
Wow! Did you notice that a needle book with Mickey and Minnie Mouse on the cover recently sold for $178.49? The needle book was dated 1931 and was imported from Germany. I did not recognize the name of the buyer, so I feel sure they were a "Mickey" collector rather than a needle book collector. I love needle books...but not that much!

I hope I am not the only one that caught Judith Katz-Schwartz on "Good Morning America" on 7/1/99. I sent an e-mail to ABC suggesting they make her a permanant part of the show. I still cannot believe that no network has picked up the defunct Personal FX.

Be sure to check out my new additions for the month. I had added four new books to the M - Z page. I would love to hear from you. Write and tell me what you like/don't like about Rosie's.

Regards,
Rosie
