Rosie's Ramblings
May 2, 2001
Hello Out There,
I was just reading my ramblings from a year ago…my luck is not quite up to snuff this May. Although I thoroughly enjoyed myself at a much-anticipated antique show last week, I came home “needle-less”. There will be another one this weekend, so my fingers are crossed.
This month my theme is “those beautiful sewing ladies”. First up is Cat. The ladies’ features on this book scream “occupied Japan”. The front and back are the same and the needles are foil-stuck. I think the name is quite odd, though there is a cat in the picture.
Next I have two beauties from Czechoslovakia, Dressmaker and Delta. I just had to show you both sides of Dressmaker because I can’t decide which is my favorite. The back shows a lady using a treadle sewing machine -- inside are matching packets. Delta has foil stuck needles. A sewing basket “still life” (not shown) is on the reverse.
Finally -- The New Needle Book. This one is marked: Mills Needle Co., Redditch, New York, Aix-la-Chapelle (I have an A & N Iowa also marked Mills). The back says “Best Needles for Daily Family Uses.” The inside of this book has THREE different kinds of needle packs.
Recently on eBay I noticed the inside of a needle book like this one mentioned the Columbian Exposition. I have THREE of these and none of mine say that. If only needle books could talk… Has anyone read Objects of Desire: The Lives of Antiques and Those Who Pursue Them (by Thatcher Freund)? I wish I could read about the lives of some of my needle books.
Until next time,
Rosie
