Rosie's Ramblings

September 3, 2000

Hello Out There,

In my life, it seems that the end of summer has always been marked by Labor Day Weekend. It has been a good summer and I’m sorry to see it go. The collecting part of my life has almost been at a standstill, but I’m finally getting back into the swing of things. Ebay continues to provide many things to wish for, if not bid on. I hope that needle books continue to crop up for many years to come.

All of this months additions fall into the advertising category. Click here to go directly to the advertising page. Most are adorned with lovely ladies. One is ugly and plain, but shows that even way back when, all advertising wasn’t pretty. What it lacks in beauty, it makes up for in content. Just in case you’re wondering what to wear as the seasons change, this needle book has the answer. On the back of “Behrend” is the following poem:

	Calico for working days
		Snowy white for Sunday
An apron keeps a tidy dress
		From Saturday to Monday
	Openwork for summer wear,
		Velvet for November,
	Cambrie fine for rosy June,
		Furs for bleak December.

What do you suppose openwork is?

I have written an article to accompany one of my advertising additions. I have a personal connection to this needle book. Most of the story relates to my hometown, but I hope that all of you will enjoy my little journey into history. In many ways, all small towns are alike. I thing you will see evidence of that here.

Keep those e-mails coming. I truly enjoy hearing from my visitors. Please take the time to visit Fabrics.net. It is a wonderful website full of information and history. Be sure to check out Joan’s Bias Tape column. I figure that most needle book collectors have been captivated by those pretty packs too. I know that I have quite a few stuck in sewing baskets around my house. Joan is attempting to compile a complete listing. Maybe you can help her out. This month they have been kind enough to mention Rosie’s and include a link back to this website. Hopefully it will bring some new folks this way.

Until next time,

Rosie
