Krycek's Motivations in S.R. 819
by Araxdelan

S.R. 819 had such a complicated plotline when it came to
Krycek that it wasnt even funny. I kept screaming out "Yesss! Hes
good!!! Finally!!!" followed by "NO! NO NO! Hes bad again!" and, at the
end, just when I finally thought that Krycek was finally heading into
good guy territory, maybe even being forgiven by Skinner, he pulls the
blackmail in the car. But it can be explained!
Ok, heres a long shot, but, as a good Slasher and Rat Lover must
do, I have to ignore Occams Razor, and come up with the most far out
theory to explain why Krycek deserves to be cleared of everything. The
obvious answer, of course, would be to say, Krycek is too attractive to
die, and he and Mulder would make a really cute couple. But that
wouldnt go over too well with anybody anyway. So heres what came up
with-
Point 1- Krycek is obviously not working for the Tunisian
government. It seems that he had infiltrated them to get the
nano-technology. There are some problems with this, like the involvement
with Matheson, but we can deal with that (or ignore it) later.
Point 2- If Krycek really was just in it to get S.R. 819 passed,
then why did he let Skinner live? Well, thats where the blackmail comes
in.
Point 3- Why Skinner? What does he have that Krycek would want?
(except a piece of Mulders ass, as I know the Mulder/Skinner people are
probably saying) And why is he saving it, with this "all in do time..."
baloney? To me, this statement took on a tone that
indicated that whatever Krycek wanted wouldnt necessarily be
un-beneficial to Skinner. Almost like he was planning something against
the Consortium, something he would need Skinners help for. Which jives
with the fact that the Consortium seemed to know nothing about this
whole little charade.
But, again, what does Skinner have? Control of the X-Files. As,
Skinner once said "Im doing what they fear most... Im re-opening the
X-Files." or something to that effect. The Consortium fears what the
X-Files may bring, but, right now, they are controlling the
X-Files through that son of a cancer stick, Spender. If Krycek could
persuade Skinner to direct the X-Files investigations in ways that would
be unfavorable to the Consortium, or, better yet, get Skinner to do
whatever he can to get Mulder and Scully back on the X-Files, and then
control everything from the inside, he could bring the Consortium to
their knees... so to speak.
A few more things to support my theory- Krycek is obviously part
of the resistance, (see The Red and the Black), and while some members
of the Consortium (especially one well dressed corpse) may also be in
favor of the resistance, they are not the ones who fear the X-Files. The
resistance tries to help Mulder and Scully on their quest. Bringing down
the Consortium through the X-Files wouldnt bring down the *entire*
Consortium, just those who would rather lay low and let the aliens do
whatever they want.
In conclusion- while Kryceks methods may be questionable, I truly
think that he and Mulder and Scully are not on opposing sides. True,
their paths are different (Mulder is looking for the truth and his
sister, Scully is looking for "plausible" answers, and Krycek
seems to be heading toward insuring the survival of the human race) but,
I think when it finally comes down to it, and everyone is swimming in
black oil and bad tempered aliens with big claws, they will learn to
work together. Heck, maybe if were lucky, Kryceks motives and
ambiguous connections to the crimes hes accused of will allow our
favorite FBI team, and all their fun friends, to forgive Krycek. And in
a (my) perfect world, at the end of the interstellar war (which we win),
Mulder and Krycek will fall into a passionate embrace, and ride off into
the sunset, The End.
A girl can dream.
