i managed successfully to drag angela to the cat's cradle so that she could finally see kristin hersh peform. angela has been a hersh fan since the early 80's and had yet to ever see her in the flesh. unfortunately, neither of us had ever been to the cat's cradle, nor are too thrilled to be around a lot of people, so there was a lot of nervous jokes being made. it was a seated event and for some strange reason we managed to snag front row, center seats. i tried to keep an eye out for jessica entering, but my brain chickened out. see, i'm a coward, and when it comes to crowds the only way i can handle it is if i pretend they're not there. hence i never once was able to turn around and look at the rest of the audience - as far as my brain knew, only the three first row existed. about 9.15 pm this small chick with short, blonde hair and a small man in a wheelchair entered the stage, stopped by a microphone each, picked up a accoustic guitar each and started one of the strangest and most comfortable events i have ever been at. kristin and vic alternate singing one song each at a time. inbetween songs they'd chit-chat with each other and the audience, but when one of them was playing.. chills. kristin would sit, turned towards vic as he played, and have this smile on her face, and as soon as he'd finish she was the first to applaud and say things like "your songs make my stomach hurt.. in a good way." when kristin played, vic would close his eyes and mouth along with certain lines, and towards the end he'd even back her up a bit with his guitar. it was just plain awesome. what was most memorable to me was in between songs as kristin was trying to decide what to play next. "what would you like to hear?" was met with a shower of requests from the audience, but what kristin heard was angela as she said "shake!" and kristin got this look on her face. "I was actually asking vic but.. what was it.." and she paused for a while and then... started to play shake. i can't begin to tell you how happy i was for angela - you have to understand, kristin hersh is to angela what tori is to me. what was even cooler was that as soon as the song ended, kristin put down her guitar and leaned on her chair towards angela, looked her straight in the eyes, smiled and asked "how was that, was that good? did you like it?" - angela answered, stunned "yes." and that was that moment. goosebumps. anyhow. i'm not good at describing. in fact, i always take about 10 pages to describe everything. so. anyhow. it was great. i took pictures. none of them will turn out well, i know, but still. so. boo! |
