the plane thing

i had to cut the story short a bit yesterday coz we had to leave as i was in the middle of typing all sorts of e-mails and the entry and all. i forgot to mention a few things:

  • the sri lanka guy and i started talking halfway across the atlantic ocean. it was a lot of fun... i've never met anybody from sri lanka (that wasn't adopted at a young age) before and he didn't know any swede's, so we spent most of the time telling each other about stuff... well, that, and i spent a fair amount of time scaring him. hehe.

after we got to detroit we walked around and talked some more while waiting for our connecting flights. it was good to have some company, although i'm afraid i came off a bit like i was trying to write a paper on sri lanka or something coz i kept posing questions like: "so what's the situation for women in sri lanka?" i learnt that medical care and school's are free, that arranged marriages are really common but that it's accepted to marry 'just coz you wanna' too, and that there are no differences to speak of in the salaries between women and men! i found that totally cool.

as the time of my flight was coming closer i was treated to a bag of sri lanka cashew nuts in a ton of spices (i take pleasure in eating things that make me wince), and i fell in love with a 500 rupie bill that he had, so he gave it to me. haha, i have sri lanka money!

  • i developed a crush on the steward serving our aisle. he looked just like a slightly younger brother of chris barrie who i've been gooey over for years, only with short dark grey hair (he only looked 30 though) and this extremely intruiging scar above the left corner of his upper lip. MmMmmMmmm. cute.

    the new roommate thing

well. when gene dropped me off at the apartement around 2.30 a.m, it turned out that gabbi (gabriel) had left the outdoors light on for me. hah. i didn't officially meet him until sunday morning.

it was so weird to listen to a stranger wake up and talk on the phone and just.. move around in my apartement. it took me 20 minutes to compose myself to open my door and introduce myself, but when i did i was happily surprised. the guy's nice! like, really nice. as i called aziza to tell her i'd made it home, he offered me a cookie - and came back with a whole plate of them just for me.

basically, in one day i have...

    • introduced him to my thing about certain people on tv - adam sandler was on comedy central so i kind of pointed and squeaked and then proceeded to explain that this is a procedure that will occure anytime i see somebody i like on tv. he seemed to take it well.

    • showed him some of my photo's from my '96 trip to israel - gabbi's from tel aviv and i had a bunch of pic's from there. it turned out that i had snapped a random picture of the street he lives on... (i was actually photographing about 40-50 birds on a telephone wire. as i did it i hissed "it's the birds!!". heh. so i'm a dork.) i also had a picture from some market of a guy painted white being a human statue and gabbi goes "oh i know that guy." - pretty funny :)

    • introduced him to my.. tori amos thing.. actually, he introduced himself to it by peeking into my room and seeing my wall that happens to have 3-4 tori posters on it. later he let me kidnap the tv to get ready to tape tori off of 120 minutes on mtv, and instead of just leaving as i went through a ton of tapes to find an empty spot, he stayed and watched my clips and ended up watching 4 live tori songs and one pj harvey song and didn't complain, didn't seem to think i was being pushy, and most of all - he actually seemed interested. he also claimed to be thoroughly impressed with bjork, though he doesn't listened to her, and he was at a suzanne vega concert a few weeks ago. i think we'll get along just fiiine...

did i even mention that he's kind'a cute? *laugh* (i know that sentence will come back and bite me in the ass, but i had to let you know.)

    the school thing

school is looking okay right now - i was dropped from my classes despite the diversity director putting out a memo about me and my situation, but i was added in all of the classes quick and easily so that's okay.

the last class, african-american literature i didn't get to take because another class i'm taking now is a pre-requisite to it so there was a conflict, but we'll see what can be sorted out. my advisor retired last semester so i'll have to get a new one and see if there's anything i can add instead.

the classes themselves are looking quite good, actually - three lit classes and one media class where the lit classes sort of overlap each other. i've had two of the four teacher's before and one of the two 'new' teacher's i know already as she used to spend a lot of time in the computer lab last semester while i was working. she's really fun and greets us as 'dear-hearts'. hehe. the class i'm most interested in is the media class - it's focusing on pop-culture and it's with one of the teacher's i had last semester and he's a bit demanding, but -very- fun in class. there's just something funny about a short, chubby white man in his 50'ies with a beard and deep southern accent quoting 2 live crew lyrics in class.

i'm leaving the lab in a few minutes to.. go to the registrar's office and drop off my 'add' form and get my ID validated and pay tuition, and then the library to return a book i have a $70+ fine on (don't ask.. the title: "Using Murder") and to the book store to get some text books.

    the movie thing

i saw "mickey blue eyes" last night and it rocked ass! i usually can very barely stand hugh grant (i'm not big on people never changing their character from movie to movie: same reason i don't like juliette lewis.) but man, the movie was funny. two scenes had me and gene almost falling out of the chairs laughing (both situated in restaurants.) - it's.. funny. that's all.

    the concert thing

i've been working on gene ever since saturday - i'm trying to get him to go to the tori/alanis concert in charlotte tomorrow with me (i'm both ride and ticket less and i know we'd have a blast). it mostly depends on if he feels he has too much schoolwork to be able to go or not. as i said, we don't have any tickets, but people have yapped plenty about that not being a problem so i'll go on that if we do go.

if we don't, i have people at least picking me up a 'venus' necklace.

    the leaving thing

yeah. bye. hehehe. see ya wednesday, i'd suppose. :)
