Donny Hathaway
Donny Hathaway was perhaps the greatest soul singer of the 1970's, whose life came to a tragic end much too soon. The beauty of his voice belied the troubles that haunted him, troubles which ultimately led Hathaway to take his own life in 1979. The music, though, remains as a testament to his brilliance. His rich, buttery voice, aptitude at the keyboard, and skill at composing are all reflected
in the work that he crafted as both a solo artist and with the incomperable Roberta Flack. A number of younger artists working today have publicly stated the importance of his work in inspiring them to craft their "current" r&b sound. His daughter Lalah now has a successful recording career of her own. In many ways, Donny Hathaway is still a vital part of today's music scene. And his recordings still manage to move those of us who have been lucky enough to discover him.
