THE SATSANGA
Since the Hong Kong Government decriminalized the homosexual act in
1991, not so much has been done to educate the public in understanding and
accepting lesbians and gay men.
Given the existence of widespread hostility toward lesbians/ gay men
among the general public, many lesbians/ gay men have difficulty coming out
to their families, thus, creating much isolation and loneliness. Open
declaration on one's sexual preference might also result in being fired
on the job or deprived of promotion prospect.
THE SATSANGA
Founded in 1993, was registered in 1994 as a non-profit-making
organization dedicated to serving lesbians and gay men. The organization is
funded by public donations.
-- Aims --
Organise edcation programs to counter homophobia, pressure and stress
caused by discrimination in our local community.
Provide counselling services, organize seminars and psychology courses.
Enhance the participation and support of lesbians/ gay men in local
community and other communities. Develop a positive self identity and life
attitude of lesbians/ gay men through enhancing participation in social
activities and volunteer work.
Provide resoures to those who have difficuties in sexual identities and
relationships. Promote mutual aid among lesbians/ gay men.
The Satsanga (meaning soul mates in Sanskrit), needs your support. If
you are interested in promoting the work of The Satsanga or in sponsoring
us, we welcome you to make a contribution to promote a healthy living
environment for lesbians/ gay men.
ACTIVITIES & SERVICES
-- Seminar / Forum / Course --
Host seminars and forums for the public. The aim is to promote
awareness of lesbians/ gay issues. Help lesbians/ gay men and the public
become more aware of the lesbians/ gay men's needs and concerns.
Organize applied psychology courses so as to enhance lesbians/ gay
self-awareness, and promote healthy intimate relationships.
-- Professional Counselling Service --
Provide professional counselling on the following issues on a limited
basis: sexual identity, relationships, family and job stress, etc.
-- Working Groups --
Involve in organization management, social activities and volunteer
work.
-- Liaison & Media Watch --
Correct misconceptions, unrealistic and unreliable information on
lesbians/ gay men by the media.
Liaise with the media and provide assistance in coverage concerning
lesbians/ gay issues from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
-- Satsanga's Newsletter --
Delivery of Satsanga's newsletter covering activities as well as other
general information on lesbians and gay men.
