Originally built as Columbus for Dominion Line and launched on February 26, 1903. She was delivered on September 12, 1903 and made her maiden voyage on October 1, 1903 from Liverpool to Boston. In December 1903 she was transferred to White Star Line, Liverpool and renamed Republic. She made her first voyage as the Republic on December 17, 1903 from Liverpool to Boston. In 1909 she was transferred to the USA to Mediterranean service. On January 23, 1909 on a voyage from New York to Genoa the Republic collided in fog with the Italian steamer Florida near the Nantucket lightship. Both ships were badly damaged, and the Republic began to sink. She had nearly 2,000 people on board. The Republic sent out the first radio distress message in the history of sea travel. Several ships set course for the position of the casualty. The White Star liner Baltic was able to take aboard the survivors from the Republic. Four people, however, had been killed in the collision. Some American coasters tried to take the Republic in tow, but she sank the following morning. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
