Anasazi Camp

Camp Type: Trail

Region: North

Elevation: 7020 ft.

Water: Purified

Campsites: 4

From 500 to 1000 A.D., the Anasazi indian tribe rested in the North Ponil Canyon. The word Anasazi comes from a Navajo word meaning "ancient ones". Used as a starting camp for crews dropped off at Six Mile Gate, this camp was first put to use in 1985. A new trail was completed in 1991 along the ridge to make hiking through the canyon more comfortable. The nearest staff camp, Indian Writings, has signs of the ancient Anasazi Indians and a dinosaur track, located between Six Mile Gate and Anasazi, is also near this area.
