Looking down Red Crater (to the north) with the remarkable, rugged ridge over the other side of the Oturere Valley at the bottom. This is from the first day of the Northern Tongariro Circuit which covers the same tracks as the morning of the Tongariro Crossing track. The bright red rock poking out at the bottom centre is the remains of a lava tube left when lava flowed from the crater.
