"Nine Men
Morris"
Below is the game board layout. We've drawn this on numerous
pieces of cardboard over the last couple of years...keep losing them;
but, it only takes a minute to draw a new one. This is a game for two
players, so each player needs 9 game pieces; use different coins, or
cut out pieces from different coloured cardboard. I found this game
on a web site, but can't remember where. Apparently, this is a really
old game played by pioneers.
Here are the rules in a nutshell...
- the object is to remove all your opponent's pieces from the
board
- players take turns placing their pieces on the board (1st
player places one, then 2nd player, 1st, etc.)
- once all 18 pieces are on the board, the person who placed 2nd
starts
- pieces can move along the lines from circle to circle, 1
circle at a time
- you can't jump over pieces
- when you get three of your pieces in a row, you remove one of
your opponent's pieces from the board
- (it doesn't count if you have placed them in a row to begin
with...)
- keep going until all of one player's pieces are gone
This is a nice, quiet, thinking game that does involve strategy.
We have had tournaments and it is a regular part of our games
repertoire. Leaders play Scouts and Scouts play Scouts and we keep
track of the games won and lost on the boards themselves. Try it out,
it's fun.
