Identification: Head and body 15"-20"; tail 9"-20"; weight 9-13 lb. Often seen in the beam of headlights or dead along the highways. About the size of a House Cat, but body heavier, legs shorter, nose pointed, face white, paper-thin ears black, often tipped with whitish; tail ratlike, round, and black; white on end. Ears and tail may be partially missing in North, owing to freezing. Usually whiteish gray in North, gray to nearly black in South. Eyeshine dull orange.
Habitat: Farming areas perferred, also found in woodlands and along streams.
