Atlantic Canada's French Heritage

Acadian was the name given to the first French settlers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island (then known as Isle Saint-Jean) who were displaced towards the end of the 18th century. The name "Cajun" for people of French background in Louisiana originated from "Acadian".

Cape Breton was formerly known as "Isle Royale". Louisbourg is a restored 18th century French colonial town located in the southeast part of Cape Breton.
