Animals from the Cambrian
A rare combination of conditions allowed the remains of marine fossils from 500
million years ago to be captured and preserved in the Burgess Shale. These
unusual specimens of ancient sea life were discovered near the town of Field
in what is now Yoho National Park.
The Burgess Shale fossils are special in both their age and how well-preserved
they are. Stephen Jay Gould's book "Wonderful Life" describes the discovery and
evolving scientific views of these unusual specimens.
