Islands in the Saint Lawrence

The Frontenac Axis runs south through the Saint Lawrence River and links the Canadian Shield to the Adirondack area of New York. It narrows to about 80 kilometers (50 miles) here. The worn-down tops of mountains appear as islands in the Saint Lawrence River.

The climate here is moderated by the Great Lakes which permits some southern species of plants and animals to extend their presence further north here. Also, some northern species are drawn south here by the same rugged granite landscapes typically found further north.
