Orienting Your Beacon to find a signal
Go Back
...Stop every 10 meters when searching for a signal and reorient your beacon through the x y and z planes.
- Rotate the beacon 90 degrees in the X - Y Plane
- Rotate the beacon 90 degrees in the Y - Z Plane
- Rotate the beacon 90 degrees in the X - Z Plane
.....Pause and listen for the beeps from the buried beacon as you reorient your beacon. Since a beacon beeps about every 2 seconds you should pause a couple of seconds every 30 degrees in each plane of orientation to ensure you can detect a signal in that plane. You only have to orient for a maximum signal once in your search. When you first detect the signal.
.....Once you detect a signal and orient your beacon for maximum signal strength maintain that orientation during the rest of the Phase 2 search.
.....Remember that the beacon's orientation is relative to your surroundings not your body. As you move your body during the remainder of the search you must keep a constant orientation between the long axis of your beacon and your surroundings. Check the alignment of the beacon's long axis relative to some distant terrain feature like a mountain top . Keep your beacon pointed at that object as you do your search to maintain a constant orientation.
