THE COMMON LOON

( GAVIA IMMER )

The Common Loon is a summertime resident of the northern tier states of the U.S. and Canada. They prefer the cool, clear waters available here. They tend to shy away from human contact with some exceptions. I've had them swim directly under my boat. In some cases they do quite well in even our busiest lakes because boaters leave them be. My favorite sound when I'm out fishing. Their high-pitched tremolo call reminds me of....Well I'm not sure what it reminds me of....maybe.... "wilderness"?
Much like the ocean fisherman keeps tabs on the seagulls to indicate fish activity, I like to observe where loons fish as it's a pretty good bet there's an ample supply of baitfish in that area. Baitfish means bass!
