Wood Badge was instituted by Scouting's founder, Lord Baden-Powell, in 1919 and has gained world-wide recognition. Those who have participated in Wood Badge are enthusiastic about its impact and consider it to be truly a "mountaintop" experience. A Scouter is approved for Wood Badge upon the recommendation of the District Leadership Training Chairman and local District Executive. Prime consideration in a person's selection is their willingness to serve youth in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, or Exploring.

The course combines leadership training skills with the application of Scouting skills in order to provide each participant with an enriching experience. It is through trained, dedicated and enthusiastic Scouters that Scouting touches the lives of an ever increasing number of youth. Trained Scouters are more effective in developing character in our youth.

The Scout Leader Wood Badge agreement of Service

"As a Scouter representing my council, I will participate in Wood Badge to develop a better understanding of the purposes and objectives of the Scouting program and how they are attained; to learn the techniques of leadership training and troop, team or post operation. Furthermore, following my return from the Wood Badge course, I will aid my council with its leadership training program and in meeting its goals and objectives for Boy Scouting in order that the character building adventure of Scouting will reach more boys."

WHAT IS WOOD BADGE?

Wood Badge is training in group leadership skills. Wood Badge consists of two parts: the practical phase and the application phase. The practical phase is an eight-day experience consisting of living with a group of Scouters in an outdoor/Scouting environment while being exposed to leadership and Scouting skills applicable in the development of both the Scouter and Scout. Through this living/working experience you develop a knowledge and understanding of leadership skills, plus an intense personal motivation to apply these skills in your Scouting position. Following the practical outdoor experience, you will carry out the commitment you made during the practical phase and will be evaluated on your performance. Throughout this application phase, you work with an assigned counselor who serves as an evaluator and a friend.

WHO MAY ATTEND WOOD BADGE?

Wood Badge is designed to meet the advanced training needs of unit leaders, specifically Scoutmasters and Assistants, Varsity Coaches and Assistants, Explorer Advisors and Associates. Each Scouter must be fully trained in Fast Start and Basic Training. Scouters in positions not directly related to troop, team or post operation should seek training more appropriate to their registered positions. Wood Badge is a training course, not an awards program. Scouters attend Wood Badge upon the recommendation of the district Training chairman and district executive. Prospective participants must be carefully evaluated to ensure that they are fully committed to the Scout Oath and Law and have successfully demonstrated good Scouting spirit. The success of the course is dependent upon the cooperative attitude of all concerned.
