The "Real Game"

In the original Parker Brothers game, Mr. Boddy was murdered and you had to figure out who did it, where in the mansion, and by what method. There were six suspects, Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, and Mrs. Peacock. There were six weapons, revolver, knife, rope, candlestick, lead pipe, and wrench. Finally there were nine rooms, lounge, library, conservatory, ballroom, dining room, kitchen, study, billard room, and hall. Each of these possibilities had a card for it.

Then all the cards were handed out to the players (numbering from two to six), except one suspect, one weapon, and one place. They were kept in a secret envelope and were the answers to the questions about the murder. In the actual game, the roll of the die would move your character around the mansion. When you entered a room, you could make a suggestion to the person on your left. It would be something like "Was it Mr. Green in the kitchen with the lead pipe." The other player would then show you one of the cards you said, if they had it. By using process of elimination, eventually one could figure out which three cards no one had and then make a final accusation. Whoever was the first person to guess all three cards in the envelope was the winner. (If you guessed wrong, you were out, but you still had to show your cards.)
