Background: Spike entered Sunnydale with his girlfriend Drusilla and one plan in mind. He was going to restore her to her former self and take over the Hellmouth. Things didn't turn out that way. The Slayer was a thorn in his side at every turn, and his missing sire, Angel, reappeared helping the Slayer. After restoring Dru, he was paralyzed and forced to watch the newly evil Angel put the moves on his girl. It got to the point where he allied himself with the Slayer to stop Angel and Dru from ending the world because he actually likes the world. To add insult to injury, after helping the Slayer and leaving town, Dru turned on him and eventually cheated on him twice with a chaos demon and a fungus demon, which brought him back to Sunnydale. In Sunnydale he hooked up with Harmony for a while and lost his ability to harm humans, courtesy of the Initiative. Since then he has been a wild card, alternatley helping and hurting the Slayer and her friends.
Motivation: It was relatively clear from the background. He dedicated his whole life to Dru, and she left him. She chose Angel over him; she chose the chaos demon over him; she chose the fungus demon over him. Spike sacrificed everything to be with her, and she threw it in his face. He put up with her visions and instanity, taking care of her every whim. Understandably he is more than a little bitter about the whole subject. More than anyone, he probably would be the one to do it since he can still kill demons. On the other hand, he still isn't completely over her . . .
