"Paging Dr. Marcus to ICU...."
Spike watched as Buffy paced back and forth across the waiting room. They had been waiting three hours and still had not seen Joyce. The nurse that they had talked to had told them that a lot of people had been on the plane, and that they should take a seat while she tried to locate Buffy's mother.
He saw Buffy stop suddenly and gasp at a man on a stretcher that was wheeled in front of her. The guy was horribly burned.
Spike stood up and walked over to the distraught Slayer. Taking her in his arms, he began stroking her back and whispering in her ear.
"It's all right, luv. The man on the phone said she would be ok."
"But Spike, what about Giles?"
Spike's body tensed in reaction to her question. He had not thought about Giles. The Watcher would have been on the plane with Buffy's mother. For the first time in his unlife, Spike didn't know what to say. He simply tightened his arms around Buffy as she started to cry.
"Oh, God! Tell me that Willow hasn't been doing spells again!" a welcomed British voice said from behind them.
Buffy immediately pulled away from Spike and ran to hug Giles.
"Giles! You're ok! Is my mom ok? Do you know where she is?" she asked him anxiously.
"Yes Buffy, we're both fine. I'll show you where her room is, they're just giving her oxygen right now." Buffy started to follow him, then turned around and saw Spike begin to sit down in his chair again.
"Come with me, please?"
Spike nodded and followed them down the hospital corridor.
"We saw that fire demon, honey." Joyce told her daughter some time later.
"So, it was he that did this?" Spike asked.
"I'm afraid so, but see what you make of this," Giles flipped on the television set that was in the hospital room.
A reporter was talking about the fire, and behind her they could see the smoldering remains of the airplane.
"Fire fighters were able to control the fire, before the plane burned to the ground....."
"Wait a minute! They put the fire out?" Buffy asked.
Giles nodded.
"How?" Spike was getting excited. If they could stop the fire, maybe the fire demon itself could be stopped the same way.
"Water." Joyce said.
"But we tried that! Water doesn't work on his fires! How come it worked now?" Buffy cried.
"I have a theory about that, if you two could calm down long enough to listen to it." Giles received two glares, but continued anyway.
"We saw the demon on the plane. He set fire to the cockpit as we were landing. The pilots were spooked and so they crash landed, causing another fire to start at the back of the plane, in an engine. You should have seen the look of terror in that demon's eye when he saw the fire that he had not started. He was the first to jump off the plane." Giles gave them a satisfied smirk as Buffy and Spike tried to figure out what he meant.
"Don't you see? The fire demon is scared of fire!" he proclaimed.
"So, what you're saying is that the ‘magic’ fire he set was put out by the ‘real’ fire? And since it was just regular fire, the fire fighters were able to put it out completely?" Spike asked.
"Very good!" Giles beamed.
"So that's how we stop it? We have to burn it?" Buffy asked in astonishment.
"It would seem so," Giles stated.
"So, what do we do now?" Spike asked Buffy.
"We fight fire with fire!"
They'd decided to stake out Joyce's house the following night. Buffy believed that the fire demon would come after her mother again. She was right.
"Sslayer..." it hissed at her.
Buffy didn't flinch as it walked up to her, arm outstretched. When it came close enough, she pulled out a lit blowtorch from behind her back and touched him with it. The ‘real’ fire quickly consumed the ‘magic’ fire, and Spike, who'd been hiding around the corner of the house, jumped out and sprayed the demon with water from the gardening hose.
All that was left of the fire demon was a pile of ashes.
"Well, that was kinda anti-climatic," Willow complained as she and the others came out of they're hiding places, sporting their own blow torches.
"Yeah, you think he would have screamed or something. You know, ‘I'm melting! I'm melting! What a world, what a world!’" Xander fell to the ground dramatically.
"Don't give up your day job." Spike said as he and the others stepped over Xander and went inside.
Later that night Spike was in his room, trying to get some much needed rest, when he heard a knock at his bedroom door. Spike growled and slowly rolled off the bed, he put his best "Do you have a death wish?" look on his face as he opened the door. It immediately turned into a smile when he saw Buffy standing there, looking a little nervous.
"What can I do for you, Slayer?" He stepped aside so that she could enter, closing the door behind her.
"Well, I wanted to thank you. You know, for taking care of me, and for helping out with whole demon thingy."
He moved to stand really close, looking down at her with lust-filled eyes.
"But most of all, I want to thank you for not leaving me," she whispered returning his needy look.
"Buffy, I swear to you, as long as I'm on this Earth, I'll never leave you!"
Buffy looked up at him, eyes sparkling with unshed tears. She believed him.
"I love you Spike." she told him.
"And I love you, Buffy." he said before claiming her lips with his own.
Without breaking the kiss, he swooped her up into his arms, and carried her to the bed. He planned to show her just how much he loved her, and he did. All night long!
