A look inside Austin's Barber Shop in downtown Beloit

Your host and barber, Rod Gottfredsen, greets you with a hearty, "Hello!"

Time has been kind to this quaint piece of Americana. Very few changes have been made to the "classic" barber shop's style in its 80+ years of history. You still see the leather, porcelain, and nickel-plated barber chairs; the Kohler pedestal shampoo bowl that's dated "7-12-16" and solid wood barber cabinets.

Austin's Barber Shop was home to the official WGN Spike O'Dell Celebrity Coffee Cup Museum until January 2004. The coffee cups may have been empty, but they were still full of fascinating stories from the many celebrity interviews on Spike O'Dell's radio call-in shows.

Austin's is one of those rare places where you actually look forward to waiting!

With over 30 years of experience Rod, is well versed in all types of hair cutting, from crewcuts to classic cuts, high and tights, to long in back short on top mullets. Rod's motto is, "Classic barbering with style."

Stop in and have a seat, enjoy a cold bottle of pop, read one of the many wildlife or sports magazines, and enjoy the barber shop banter!

After seeing the airplane seat some kids can't wait to get their hair cut!

Austin's is considered a community center where, just as in times past, politics are argued, sports discussed and boys are allowed to hang out with the men, at least for as long as it takes to get a haircut.

And there's more than fancy chairs to keep young customers interested! Austin's Barber Shop has many special treats for younger customers. There's the Coca-cola bottle collection, computer and board games, books and magazines. Children can even learn how we used to open our pop bottles on the vintage Coca-cola vending machine! (Hint: We didn't have twist-off caps.)

If you've had "great expectations" for a good haircut at a "cost cutting" chain salon and were disappointed by inexperienced stylists, it's time to make an appointment with a real barber at Austin's.

For an appointment call 608-365-0006 or toll-free at 888-245-3658.
