David Eric Grohl was born on January 14, 1969, in Warren, Ohio. Dave started out playing drums with Freak Baby, who changed their name into Mission Impossible. Mission Impossible played fast, explicit punk. Later on they changed their name into Fast. Fast split up somewhere around 1986. After that Dave was in a band called Dain Bramage together with the bass-player from Mission Impossible. Then at the age of sixteen he decided to audition as drummer for the band Scream. At first they thought he was too young, but eventually they asked him to join the band. After a couple of months Dave joined Scream, who eventually became one of America's most explosive hard-core bands. After practicing for half a year with Scream, the band went on a two-month tour in the US in October 1987. Dave saw Kurt and Krist for the first time in San Francisco where he was backstage at a Melvins gig. He didn't actually speak with them. Kurt and Krist first noticed Dave's drumming capabilities, when Scream were playing at the I-Beam in San Francisco. In September 1990 Dave was in rather deep financial problems after Scream's tour was canceled, and he decided to phone his friend Buzz Osborne (King Buzzo). Buzz knew Kurt and Krist were great admirers of Dave's drumming, and gave Dave Krist' phone-number. Dave phoned Krist, who asked him to come to Seattle. Dave saw Nirvana play for the first time when Scream was touring in Europe. He thought they sounded a lot like the Melvins, which he didn't mind at all. When he arrived in Seattle he saw them perform with drummer Danny Peters, who later joined Screaming Trees briefly and, who's now drummer with Mudhoney. Dave auditioned for Kurt and Krist in the Dutchman. They knew immediately he was the drummer they'd been looking for. Dave played his first show with Nirvana in the North Shore Surf Club in Olympia.
