Participating in Archaeology

Many archaeology projects welcome volunteers. Opportunities usually range from screening soil and washing artifacts to assisting in the excavation and artifact analysis, based on a volunteer's previous experience. Contacting your state's archaeology society is a good place to find projects that are seeking volunteers.

Field schools and internships are another great way to participate in archaeology. These programs usually offer college credit for field and or lab work. Many field schools and internships use the Archaeological Fieldwork Server to advertise.
