Maluku jolted by 5.5 earthquake
Bandarlampung (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale
jolted Saumlaki, Maluku, on Tuesday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 7.01 degrees southern latitude and
139,93 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 67 km below sea level, around 178 km
northwest of Saumlaki, according to data from the Meteorology and Geophysics
Agency (BMG).
The agency said on its website that Indonesia was rocked by four earthquakes on
Monday (July 9), respectively a 4.9-magnitude earthquake 208 km southwest of
Gunung Sitoli (North Sumatra), a 5.0-magnitude earthquake 34 km from Kalianda
(Lampung, southern Sumatra), a 4.7-magnitude earthquake 368 km southwest of
Cilacap (Central Java) at around 9.35 p.m. local time, and a 5.1-magnitude earthquake
346 km southwest of Cilacap (Central Java) at around 9.46 pm local time.
Indonesia sits on the seismically active "Pacific Ring of Fire" and experiences
frequent earthquakes as well as tsunamis triggered by underwater earthquakes.
On December 26, 2004, Aceh province and Nias Island (North Sumatra province) were
devastated by a massive earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale and a
subsequent deadly tsunami which killed at least 170,000 people and rendered around
one million people homeless. (*)
